Before Sunday, the Redskins struggled to rush for touchdowns, force turnovers and win with ease.

Hello, San Francisco. Goodbye, troubles.

Washington beat visiting San Francisco, 52-17, in front of 90,224 fans. The 52 points represents the most the Redskins have scored at FedEx Field and their most since Nov. 10, 1991, when they scored 56 against Atlanta. It was also the most lopsided win since a 38-point victory over Arizona in 1992.

“Everything went our way,” said Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, who became the 14th NFL coach to win 150 games. “You hope you don’t use them all up in one day.”

The Redskins (4-2) scored four touchdowns rushing — their first such scores this season — against 1-5 San Francisco, with starter Clinton Portis rushing for three as well as 101 yards.

“It was the best feeling,” Portis said of reaching the end zone, where he danced one time and did cartwheels another time. “There’s only one other feeling in the world that can compare to that.”

“That’s a big confidence boost to the line,” Redskins tackle Chris Samuels said. “Clinton is an awesome back. I told him this week I’d talk to the line and tell them we have to get you in the end zone. Then look at him, doing cartwheels.”

Even third string running back Rock Cartwright rushed for a score. And backup Ladell Betts had 92 yards on 12 carries.

The defense, which entered with two turnovers and five sacks, doubled both those totals. Safety Sean Taylor intercepted one pass and linebacker Marcus Washington forced a fumble. Both turnovers led to touchdowns.

Washington grabbed a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter on Portis’ five-yard scoring run. A 17-yard touchdown first quarter run by San Francisco’s Kevan Barlow slowed the rout. But not for long as the Redskins grabbed a 35-7 halftime lead.

“We’re still a Rocky Balboa-type team,” Washington said, “but it was nice to get a Mike Tyson-type win and knock someone out.”

Congrats Coach Gibbs on winning #150!!
